In modern times, there is a large variety of materials used forbody piercing. This can cause some confusion as to which materials are preferrable and which are most prone to causeallergic reactions and such.

This article aims to provide a short list of the most common materials used, and whether they are best fit for new piercings or already healed ones.

Glass

Glass is a common material which has been used for thousands of years. Earplugs made of glass has been found in ancient egyptian tombs. If correctly shaped and manufactured, glass is an excelent material, comfortable to wear, tough, and safe to the body. However cheaper glass beads that's not covered in a metal shell can easily break into shards. If you drop a jewellry on the floor, you probably, won't be able to use it again. Also if you have a cheap bead in a tounge piercing and accidentily chew on it, it can break into tiny shards which obviously is not very good for your mouth. Glass is possible tosterilizein a steam-autoclave but the heat may cause cracking in cheaper products.
